What is Divided (Indexing) Wire EDM Cutting?

Standard wire EDM machines typically operate on 3+2 axes, namely X, Y, Z + U, V axes. With standard machines, cutting can be performed at specific shapes and angles, with a maximum of 4 simultaneous axes. Divided (indexing) wire EDM machines feature an additional axis called the A-axis, which allows the workpiece to be rotated during cutting. This high-precision A-axis minimizes errors that may occur during the attachment and detachment of the divider. Precision die parts can be clamped in a single setup and removed from the machine once the operation is complete. Additionally, simultaneous 5-axis cutting can be performed while the divider continuously rotates.

What is Wire EDM Cutting?

Divided (indexing) wire EDM cutting is a machining technique that uses the principle of electrical discharge to process metal. It employs a thin wire electrode specifically designed to shape and cut the workpiece. This wire electrode performs the metalworking process through high-voltage electric currents, providing exceptional precision and surface quality. It is also suitable for processing challenging materials, including hard alloys such as diamond. As a result, the machined parts achieve extremely precise dimensions and excellent surface finishes.

Wire EDM cutting has become an indispensable solution for meeting the industry's increasing complexity and precision requirements. This technology is expected to advance further in the future, with improvements such as faster processing speeds, the ability to handle larger workpieces, and a wider range of materials. Although wire EDM technology has significantly developed in recent years, there are still some limitations regarding the shapes that can be machined. Using a divider (indexing) minimizes these constraints.

Wire EDM with Rotary Axis: Precision and Quality Combined

Our facility offers a specialized service to meet industrial cutting needs: Wire EDM with Rotary Axis. This cutting method provides high precision and excellent quality, enabling the accurate machining of metals and other hard materials. Divided (indexing) wire EDM plays a crucial role in many industries where precise parts and complex geometries must be produced. Ideal for all types of intricate metal components, this innovative technology ensures high accuracy, superior surface finish, and outstanding efficiency.

Why Choose Wire EDM with Rotary Axis?

Wire EDM with a rotary axis offers numerous advantages over traditional cutting methods:

  1. Precision Cutting: Wire EDM provides exceptional accuracy, capable of cutting from millimeters down to microns. This is a significant advantage across a wide range of applications, from industrial components to precision medical instruments. The rotary axis ensures that materials retain intricate details and complexity while achieving micron-level accuracy for every part.
  2. Material Versatility: This method can cut a wide variety of materials, offering a broad range of applications. Any electrically conductive metal can be machined using wire EDM.
  3. High Repeatability: Linear scales on the X and Y axes of our machines eliminate dimensional errors. Encoders tracking and controlling the servo motors are also present on the rotary axis. This ensures that every cut achieves the same perfect result, enhancing the quality of your parts. With the rotary axis, all operations can be completed in a single setup, minimizing errors associated with repeated mounting and dismounting.
  4. Machining Advantages: Wire EDM allows cutting of hard metals that cannot be machined using traditional milling, turning, or other material removal processes. Closely spaced cuts do not interfere with each other, minimizing material waste.
  5. Surface Quality: The resulting surfaces are smooth and flawless, improving both the aesthetics and functionality of the final product. Depending on the machine technology, up to 5–6 passes can be made on the same surface, ensuring the cutting wire achieves the desired finish after rough cutting.
